The old southern charms of Tennessee are waiting to be explored in Clarksville, a small city on the Kentucky border. In Clarksville, visitors can take a self-guided tour through an historic downtown area—with a large collection of 1870s' architecture along with restaurants, shopping, entertainment and museums—over an overpass to the banks of the Cumberland River and along a lighted walkway that winds its way past parks and playgrounds to the RiverCenter pavilion, which hosts events and outdoor festivals. Clarksville is an excellent spot to explore rural Tennessee and Kentucky as well. Visitors can tour nearby farms, plantations and tobacco barns where the famed Tennessee tobacco crop is still smoke-cured in much the same way it was in the 19th century.
